Water and Environmental Sanitation Program

Ensuring access to safe water and improved sanitation

Salam Yemen Foundation believes that access to clean water and safe sanitation services is a fundamental human right and an urgent necessity for a dignified life and public health. In light of the current humanitarian situation in Yemen, which we are witnessing to this day, the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program is of the utmost importance within our vital interventions. The program targets the most vulnerable communities, especially poor families, women, children, and displaced persons who suffer from water scarcity and deteriorating sanitation services.

Main program objective:

The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program at Salam Yemen Foundation primarily aims to ensure sustainable access for target communities to safe, potable, and usable water sources, and to improve sanitation and hygiene services. Thus, we seek to effectively contribute to promoting public health, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases and contaminated environments, and protecting human dignity.

Our main work areas in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme:

To achieve these vital goals, the Peace Yemen Foundation, through the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program, is implementing an integrated set of projects, including:

1. To provide safe and sustainable water sources, the program focuses on drilling and rehabilitating wells with solar-powered pumps, protecting and developing natural springs, repairing and expanding community water networks, and ensuring access to safe drinking water through the distribution of storage tanks and direct water trucking to vulnerable communities in emergencies.

2. Improving sanitation services: * Construction and rehabilitation of toilets: Establishing safe and sanitary toilets (taking into account gender segregation and the needs of people with disabilities) in homes, schools, health centers, and IDP camps. * Repairing and rehabilitating sanitation systems: Rehabilitating damaged sewerage networks and safe disposal systems for solid and liquid waste to prevent pollution of the environment and water resources.

3. To promote personal and public hygiene, the program distributes essential kitscontaining soap, water purification materials, and feminine hygiene productswhile conducting innovative community awareness campaigns on handwashing and safe water management, and empowering communities by involving them, especially women, in the planning and maintenance of WASH projects to ensure local ownership and sustainability.

Our commitment to sustainability and community impact:

We pay special attention to ensuring that our interventions reach women, children, and marginalized groups. We work to build the capacity of local communities and raise public awareness of the importance of environmental sanitation as an integral part of preventive health, particularly in areas affected by conflict or natural disasters, to ensure the sustainable positive impact of our projects.
